Phyllostachys edulis
Moso, Chinese Timber Bamboo.

P. edulis shooting away!

A very large hardy bamboo. Young culms are covered with a velvety coat of soft hairs. The most useful bamboo in China, used for food, timber, paper, plywood and flooring. This plant loves it in NZ and gets to 20m tall and up to 200mm dia.  Pictured here doing super well in our Cherimoya orchard but should be sweet in -20°C conditions. If you don't agree with the name, relax and realise many other botanically literate also have questions about the nomenclature. Full details are reproduced below (thanks to here). Even proper botanical names for bamboo are unclear making naming a bit difficult. We purposfully use the universally understood Latin names to help avoid some of the confusion . P. edulis is what this species has been traditionally called by our far more clued up bamboo friends so we plan to stick with it rather than use the maybe be more correct---- Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel ex H. de Lehaie
