Our methods of growing are open to scrutiny from customers, growers and scientists, please phone and visit us when in our area.

We have not ever used any insecticides, fungicide, spray or injections- organic or otherwise.

We are not a member of any of the 'organic' associations as we are disappointed with acceptance of tree injections and other extraneous practices. We do acknowledge the extra effort organic growers put into their crops and always prefer to support them instead of ‘conventional’ produce however we do see room for improvement even in organic farming practice (particularly with regard to cultivation, sprays and nutrient use).

As an example, it is standard 'organic' practice to make compost from ingredients from another part of the farm or another farm, if farmers use of nutrients like this continues it will impossible for all to 'go organic'. Natural growing methods produce 'compost' on the spot negating the need for transport and supply.

Often when making the transition from ‘conventional’ to ‘organics’ growers develop a substitute mentality; they use an accepted ‘organic’ spray rather than the supposed more toxic chemical counterpart. The most important ‘organic’ sprays (BT and copper) are widely used and can be abused by conventional and organic growers alike. Natural methods have a very different philosophy.

Very few biocides of any origin are truly specific and have no place in natural food growing systems. Rather than plaster an insecticide about, natural growing considers the bigger picture.

In an intact ecosystem new pest species fail to get a hold due to the fact every niche is full, predator insects and native birds are geared to control problem insects and if encouraged a healthy balance is easily established.

While BT is relatively non toxic to humans and certainly has its place especially in the elimination of new pests, routine spraying is well known to cause wide scale resistance therefore its use should be occasional at most.

Copper as a fungicidal spray has such a long history that it can be found in excess in the soil of most growing areas. While copper can be useful it should be noted that it is an effective destroyer of beneficial associations of mycorrhizal fungi which play a big part in the health of avocado trees.

Its clear to us that if the number of species around us drop below a certain threshold we might not be able to sustain the production of our life giving natural fruit. For this reason we don’t believe in using sprays of any kind- when you eat our produce you can feel safe even if you are the most sensitive of people.
However, we do use simple solutions like the age old country arts of snaring, trapping and shooting to outwit cunning wild predators and curtail their nightly carnage among the defenceless native creatures.
